The poinsettia is the most iconic Christmas flower — and one of the most satisfying pipe cleaner crafts you can make in December. Bold red bracts, yellow center, deep green leaves. No glue, no scissors, 15 minutes.
This guide covers how to make a classic pipe cleaner poinsettia step by step, 6 color variations for every Christmas style, and exactly how to use your poinsettia in wreaths, bouquets, wall hangings and table centerpieces.
💡 Already made pipe cleaner flowers before? The poinsettia uses the same petal-loop technique as the daisy — see our pipe cleaner daisy flower guide if you need a refresher.

How to Make a Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia – Step by Step
Step 1 — Make the outer bracts
A poinsettia does not have petals — it has bracts, which are large modified leaves that look like petals. This distinction matters for the shape: bracts are longer and more pointed than flower petals.
Take one full-length red pipe cleaner and fold it into a long narrow pointed oval — 12–14 cm long, pointed at both ends. Pinch the two ends together at the base and twist once to lock. This is one outer bract.
Repeat for all 8 outer bracts. Keep them as uniform as possible — the symmetry of a poinsettia is what makes it recognizable.
Step 2 — Make the inner bracts
Take your shorter red pieces (8 cm each) and fold each into a smaller pointed oval — same shape as the outer bracts but approximately half the size.
Make 4 inner bracts total.
Step 3 — Make the yellow center
Take the yellow pipe cleaner and fold it back and forth accordion-style into 6 short equal sections. Twist the center tightly 3 times to create a small tight bundle. Fluff the ends outward slightly — these are the tiny yellow flowers (cyathia) at the center of a real poinsettia.
Step 4 — Assemble the flower
Hold the yellow center upright. Press the base of one inner bract against the yellow center base and wrap its twisted tail around once. Repeat for all 4 inner bracts, spacing them evenly.
Now add the 8 outer bracts around the outside of the inner bracts, spacing them evenly between the inner bracts. Wrap all tails together at the base and twist firmly — 5 full rotations. The more you twist, the more firmly the bracts hold their arrangement.

Step 5 — Shape the bracts
Gently spread all 12 bracts outward into a flat star shape. The 4 inner bracts should sit slightly above and inside the 8 outer bracts — creating the classic two-layer poinsettia silhouette.
Press each bract flat with your fingertip. Unlike lily petals which curve backward, poinsettia bracts lie relatively flat and open — almost horizontal.
Step 6 — Make the double stem
Twist two green pipe cleaners together for one firm stem. Attach to the flower base — 3 full rotations.
Step 7 — Add the leaves
Poinsettia leaves are large and deeply lobed. Fold a full green pipe cleaner into a large broad oval — wider and rounder than lily leaves. Make 2 leaves and attach one halfway down the stem and one two-thirds down, on opposite sides.
Your poinsettia is complete.

How to Use a Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia
In a Christmas wreath: Attach the poinsettia stem to a wire wreath base by twisting it around the frame 3 times. Add pine branch sprigs and red berries (small red pipe cleaner loops) around it. One large poinsettia at the base center of a wreath is the classic placement.

In a Christmas bouquet: Combine 2–3 poinsettias with white lilies, red roses and green leaves for a stunning Christmas flower arrangement. Full bouquet assembly in our pipe cleaner flower bouquet ideas guide.
As a table centerpiece: Make 5–7 poinsettias of different sizes. Place in a shallow wide vase or a terracotta pot filled with pebbles. Surround with green leaf sprigs and small red berry loops. The most impressive pipe cleaner Christmas centerpiece you can make in under an hour.

On a wall hanging: Attach one large poinsettia as the centerpiece of a Christmas wall hanging with green leaf sprigs and red berries. Full wall hanging tutorial in our pipe cleaner wall hanging guide.
As gift wrapping: Twist the poinsettia stem around a ribbon bow on top of a wrapped gift. The poinsettia replaces the traditional bow and makes the gift instantly festive and unique.
In a flower crown: Attach the poinsettia at the top center of a Christmas flower crown with holly leaves and red berries. Full crown tutorial in our pipe cleaner flower crown guide.
Pro Tips for a Poinsettia That Looks Like the Real Thing
12 bracts minimum — a real poinsettia has many bracts. 8 outer + 4 inner is the minimum for a convincing result. Fewer than 8 bracts looks sparse and unconvincing.
Two distinct layers — the inner bracts must sit visibly above the outer bracts. If all 12 bracts are at the same level, the flower looks flat. Gently push the 4 inner bracts upward after assembly.
Keep bracts flat — unlike lilies and roses, poinsettia bracts lie nearly horizontal. If your bracts curl upward they look like a generic flower, not a poinsettia.
Large leaves matter — poinsettia leaves are prominent. Use full-length pipe cleaners for the leaves and make them wide. Small leaves look wrong on this flower.
Red is essential — the one color detail you cannot change for a recognizable poinsettia is the red bracts. Every other element (center color, leaf shade, stem) can vary but the bracts must be red for the classic look.
Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia as a Christmas Classroom Project
The poinsettia is the ideal December classroom craft — festive, achievable in 15–20 minutes, and produces a display-worthy result that every child can take home.
Ages 7–9: Make the classic red poinsettia with adult guidance on the bract assembly step.
Ages 10–12: Full independent construction. Challenge them to attempt the two-tone red and green variation.
Ages 13+: Make a full Christmas centerpiece — 3 poinsettias, 5 holly leaves, red berries, assembled in a terracotta pot.
